winning a goldfish at a county fair or carnival is a tradition that deserves an upgrade.
With so much information right at your fingertips online, 24/7 you can get your new little friend started off on the right fin (so to speak)
Here at the Oasis Camel Dairy, we enjoy and care for our fair "winners", some of which are going on over twenty years old and close to a foot long!
that little goldfish in that bag, cup or pet carrier box is just a baby. Make sure you get your fish into something larger... at least a few gallons right away and eventually about 20 gallons. Even if you can only upgrade to a 5 gallon or 10 gallon enclosure, your fish needs water volume to stay healthy. The smaller the watery home, the more quickly the water becomes toxic from the fish's waste and breathing.
New aquariums are expensive.
But you need something right now.
A clean plastic 20 gallon tote makes a great first home for your goldfish. Plenty of room to swim and plenty of water to keep toxins at bay.
Winning a goldfish is rarely planned. You just suddenly have a fish and no suitable place for it. If you take a quick detour on your way home from the fair you can pickup a few things INEXPENSIVELY to get your fish friend moved in right.
That tiny goldfish really needs a lot more room to be healthy. An adult goldfish needs at least 20 gallons of water to call home. You can start your baby goldfish out in something smaller but make sure it is at least a few gallons.
And as far as shape... wide is better for goldfish than tall. They like to swim side-to-side, not up-and-down.
Think of your fish's water as the air he breathes... BECAUSE IT IS! Having a filter means all the water in the enclosure will pass through that filter and help convert the ammonia created by fish waste and respiration into less harmful substances.
The least expensive/highly effective form of filtration is using an air pump with a sponge filter. Just take the airpump, attach a suitable length of airline tubing, and pop the end of the tubing onto the sponge filter. The bubbling action draws the water through as the bubbles go up. The sponge becomes the home for the beneficial bacteria that converts the ammonia.
For about $79.00... (and that includes $25.00 to buy a 10 gallon plastic tote) ... you can make your goldfish start-up kit via Amazon. But keep in mind, it will take these items a while to get to your home. Best practice would be to pick them up on your way home from the fair or carnival!
You need TWO commercial products to add to your water. (One you will only use for a short time... maybe a month and the other you will use every time you add water to your fish's enclosure.
1) Dechlorinator: removes harmful chlorine from your tap water. Use this in the recomended amounts every time you change/add water. Seachem Prime and API StressCoat are both declorinators.
2) Biological Stabilizer: A new fish tank needs time to develope the natural biological colonies of microorganisms to help convert deadly ammonia into more tolerable nitrates.
Seachem Stability and API Quick Start are both nitrogen cycle starters. We use Seachem Stability.
You can find cheap or even free fish tanks all day long on facebook, in thrift shops, garage sales and craigslist.
But you need something BIG... NOW!
